Pre-primary (Age group: 3-5 years)

For this age group, the focus is on nurturing the fundamental communication abilities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. At the same time, we develop their understanding of the nature and world around them through engaged exploration and enquiry. At Greenberry World School, the world is the learning space. So, children observe trees, flowers, and the sun; play with natural ‘objects’ (sand, water, etc.); go out to explore the local hospital, fire station, park, factory, police station, and other institutions; listen to stories from members of the community; and interact with artisans and craftsmen visiting the school. The objective is to provide opportunities to link their known and familiar world with new discoveries, so that they eventually become lifelong learners. Our curriculum is not so much about ‘teaching a language’, but giving children opportunities to read, write, and speak - to help them communicate their thoughts and ideas both orally and in written form. Side-by-side, they also learn to use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time, and money; to compare quantities and objects; and to solve problems. As their verbal language skills are still developing at this stage, art and crafts are ways by which children learn to express and articulate their thoughts. They sing, make music, dance; and experiment with a variety of materials, tools, techniques, colour, design, texture, form, and function.
